Engineering General Purpose: To inform Specific purpose: To educate the audience about engineering and the opportunities it can offer. Thesis: Engineering is a very broad occupation and by going into this field you can almost go anywhere you want with it. 1.Introduction a.Are any of you engineers or have thought about going into engineering? If you like to come up with your own designs and have a creative mind to innovate then engineering would be the place for you. b.I will discuss a few different types of engineers and what the qualifications to be an engineer then I will focus on my area of interest which is mechanical engineering and medical devices. 2.Body a.Engineering is a very broad category that can let you pursue your interests. i.Engineering is a degree that you can tailor to what you like to do from cars, make-up, medicine, food, or clothing. For instance if you like fishing you could be an engineer to develop fishing rods or lures. I myself would like design boats or medical devices. ii.Types of Engineers iii.To be an engineer you usually just need a four year bachelors degree in some type of engineering, although sometimes a science or mathematics major qualify also. The degree requires a lot of math and science; I know this because I am trying to finish this degree. b.The job outlook for engineering is very promising according to The Bureau of Labor Statistics engineering jobs are expected to grow by about 6% until the year 2020. And that?s engineering as a whole, also from The Bureau of Labor Statistics; Software Engineering is one of the fasting growing careers which is expected to grow by about 30% every year until 2020(ITCareerFinder). c.Engineering also offers good salary opportunities i.The average starting salary for a mechanical engineer like me is around $60,000 which is pretty good for a student just coming out of college. ii.The median salary is about $83,000 with the top 10% of engineers earning six-figures and above. 3.Transition: Now that I?ve briefly talked about the field of engineering, I?ll proceed to talk about my major and what I do with it. a.Mechanical engineering i.Mechanical engineering is probably the broadest field of engineering. It touches a small part of every aspect of engineering such as chemistry, physics, thermodynamics, and math. ?Diversity? is the key word when it comes to Mechanical Engineering. There are many fields in which Mechanical engineering plays a role: automated manufacturing, environmental control, transportation, biomedical fields, computer fields, fossil fuel and nuclear power?the list goes on and on. Mechanical Engineers are concerned with imagining and implementing programs and devices that improve our world and our movement in it. (Princeton Review) ii.I like mechanical engineering the best because with a degree in it you can go to almost any company and apply for a job. All companies utilize an engineer at some point. I knew I wanted to be a mechanical engineer when I was a sophomore in high school. 4.So that?s a little about mechanical engineering and now I will talk about my interest in medical devices a.Medical Devices i.Now even though I am only in my third year of classes here at UND to become a mechanical engineer. I have a lot more experience than most students on campus even before I going to school for engineering. ii.My dad owns a small medical device company so, when I was younger I was always around medical devices and learning how they worked and functioned in the body. iii.Being able to work with medical devices provides a very interesting aspect to the engineering field because not only do you get to come up with designs and concepts you get to help further the advancement of healthy living. iv.Going to animal labs, seeing how a device functions within a body or organ. v.The medical device field provides a new concept all the time; you?re not constricted to doing the same thing every day. That?s why I like to work with medical devices. Once you finish working on a project that deals with a certain part of the body, the next project can deal with a whole other part of the body. b.Transition: With all that being said engineering can be a very self rewarding field that?s lets you
